"Two New Virulence Genes in Salmonella typhimurium, a Possible Tool for Living Vaccine."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 4th International Conference on the Prevention of Infection, held May 6-7, 1996, in Nice, France, "Two new virulence genes, orf34 and orf57, located at 23 min on the S. typhimurium chromosome were identified and characterized. Insertional mutation of orf34 and orf57 reduced by 3 logs the LD50 of the highly virulent isogenic wild type (WT) strain after peritoneal challenge in mice. Mice surviving this challenge were protected from a 2nd challenge with WT at high inoculum. In contrast to the WT, orf34 and orf57 mutants failed to propagate in macrophages. orf34 and orf57...
