Increase in Diphtheria Antitoxin Levels in Donors Coincides with Vaccine Use

A recent diphtheria epidemic in eastern Europe and inadequate protective levels of diphtheria antitoxin (DAT) among adults in parts of Europe highlights the potential for outbreaks in developed countries, noted Rajesh K. Gupta et al., Massachusetts Public Health Biologic Laboratories and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts ("Diphtheria Antitoxin Levels in US Blood and Plasma Donors," the Journal of Infectious Diseases, June 1996;173:1493-1497).
