International Efforts Focus on Polio Outbreak in Albania

The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Rotary have implemented a "... massive polio vaccination campaign ..." in Albania after more than 100 polio cases and 12 related deaths were reported.

The campaign began in October 1996 and those involved in the international efforts plan to vaccinate 4.5 million Albanians. USA Today reported that, according to the WHO, "Of particular concern to public health officials is the potential for large numbers of seasonal migrants to spread the polio virus."

But "... neighboring countries are on the alert." Immunization programs have been implemented...
