Earlier Vaccination Could Reduce Risk of Diabetes

Beginning childhood immunizations in the first month of life could reduce the risk of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Production of the antiviral cytokine alpha interferon is stimulated by vaccination. Alpha interferon has been linked to the induction of IDDM and other autoimmune conditions.

However, the release of alpha interferon at birth could have a differential effect: by inhibiting viruses carried by the mother, it may act to prevent diabetes.
