Oral Vaccine Prepares Canadian Military for Zaire and Rwanda

Canadian soldiers waiting at the passenger terminal at CFB Trenton for flights to the troubled African nations of Zaire and Rwanda hastily swallowed their dose of an oral vaccine to protect them against the debilitating effects of cholera.

The explosive spread of cholera was one of the reasons prompting Canada to send soldiers to the region. The oral cholera vaccine - soon to be available to all Canadian travelers - affords protection with a single dose, and is virtually free of side effects.
