Th2 Cytokines Linked to Poor Anti-HIV CTL Response in Children

T cells from children lacking anti-HIV cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTLs) tend to produce T-helper type 2 (Th2) cytokines in response to the virus.

Some infants born to HIV infected women develop AIDS symptoms very soon after birth. Such children have been thought to have particularly immature immune systems.

But a new study suggests that it is not the relative maturity of the children's immune system, but the way their immune systems respond to HIV that make them particularly vulnerable.
