According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held December 1-5, 1996, in Baltimore, Maryland, "We have assessed the ability of an oral vaccine, consisting of Salmonella typhimurium (AroA-) expressing the protein core of gp72 of Trypanosoma cruzi, to protect mice against a contaminative challenge with infective parasites. A PCR-produced fragment encoding the protein core of gp72 was inserted into pGEX and pHS164. pHS164-gp72 propagated in S. typhimurium LB5000 (res-, met+) was used to transform S. typhimurium SL33-2.
