"Vaccination with Naked DNA Partially Protects Mice Against Challenge Schistosome Infection."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held December 1-5, 1996, in Baltimore, Maryland, "Mice vaccinated with recombinant IrV-5, a 62- kDa antigen with sequence similarity to myosin or ECL3, the 5'-half of a 200- kDa glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored surface protein that has little similarity to any protein sequences in the database, show a 50-60% reduction in worm burden following challenge. However, in the case of IrV-5, the protection was dependent on the presentation of the recombinant protein to the host's immune system and required that IrV-5 be delivered in the form of micelles.
