Oral Vaccine Protects Mice Against Autoimmune Diabetes

Tiny amounts of an insulin antigen conjugated to the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) protects against autoimmune diabetes in mice.

Induction of oral tolerance has long been proposed as a means of treating or preventing allergic and autoimmune diseases. But traditional approaches require feeding of massive doses of antigen over a long period, and these approaches generally fail in individuals who already are immunologically sensitized.

Previous studies demonstrated that microgram amounts of antigen coupled with CTB can suppress systemic T-cell-mediated inflammatory responses in both naive and immune animals (Sun et al., PNAS, 1994;91:10795-9).
