HMO Tracking System Helps Prevent Infection in Newborns

A health-maintenance organization (HMO) perinatal hepatitis B virus (HBV) program has helped ensure that at-risk infants receive prophylaxis and vaccination.

The appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis for infants born to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive mothers is the administration of hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG, a plasma product) at birth. The infants also require the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine, indicated the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia (CDC, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report [MMWR], May 2, 1997;46(17):378-380).
