According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Fifth International Conference on Travel Medicine, held March 24-27, 1997, in Geneva, Switzerland, "We will report the results of a phase I/II clinical study that has identified a highly effective experimental malaria vaccine formulation that protected volunteers against a homologous sporozoite challenge delivered by infectious laboratory-reared mosquitoes. A recombinant form of the Plasmodium falciparum CS protein was expressed in yeast in fusion with HBsAg yielding the particulate antigen RTS,S.
