Vaccination Against Hepatitis B May Select Mutant Virus

Immune pressure exerted by vaccination against hepatitis B at birth may select for a mutant virus in those that become carriers, according to a report from Taiwan.

Researcher Ping-Ing Lee and colleagues suggested that incorporation of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) corresponding to individual variants could solve the problem of mutation ("Detection of Hepatitis B Surface Gene Mutation in Carrier Children with or without Immunoprophylaxis at Birth," Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1997;176:427-430).
