Five African Countries Join Forces To Fight Diseases

The five states of Africa's Great Lakes region, Burundi, the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania, signed a pact vowing to co-operate to halt epidemics such as cholera and malaria.

The World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland, said the countries would pool stocks of drugs and vaccines, conduct joint research, and meet regularly on public health issues.

The document was signed on the last day of a two-day meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, attended by health ministers and officials, according to the United Nations health agency.

Nearly 10 percent of the population of the five countries are refugees...
