IL-1(beta) Gene Transfer to Melanoma Cells Regulates Tumor Growth

Retrovirus-mediated gene transfer of a hybrid interleukin (IL)-1(beta) gene into a B16 mouse melanoma tumor model recruits leukocyte subsets and reduces tumor growth in vivo.

IL-1 is a cytokine with different properties from most other cytokines: it lacks a signal sequence. This means that it remains in its immature proform within cells. The release of IL-1 has been shown to be restricted predominantly to activated monocytes and macrophages, and is associated with apoptosis of the producer cell.
