Editorial Discusses Selective Immunization Policies

Many of the conditions in which immunization against influenza and pneumococcal infection are indicated are more common in elderly people. Some countries regard old age as an indication in itself, while others do not.

Stuart Handysides, editor of the on-line publication, Eurosurveillance Weekly <http://www.eurosurv.org>), observed that while it is recommended that the elderly be vaccinated against 'flu and pneumonia, in actuality, the proportion of those who are is low (Eurosurveillance Weekly, November 6, 1997).
