Syphilis Vaccine Remains Elusive Despite Advances

Ninety-two years after the discovery that Treponema pallidum causes syphilis, there is still no vaccine.

But this may change as the new tools of molecular biology force the parasite to yield its closely held secrets.

"A vaccine against syphilis has been one of the dreams of treponemal investigators," said Justin Radolf of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas. But it remains a dream that is still somewhat beyond our grasp."
