According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis, lymphoproliferative disease and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Thus far, efforts in developing an effective vaccine have utilized a single gp350 membrane glycoprotein subunit vaccine. Partial, but not complete protection has been demonstrated in clinical trials with the product. Our hypothesis is that a multivalent vaccine composed of several different EBV proteins would be superior to a single-component vaccine.
