WHO Won't Make Global HBV Vaccine Target Date

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it would miss its target to introduce a hepatitis B vaccine world-wide by the end of 1997 because some countries said the number of cases did not justify the cost.

The WHO wanted all countries in the world to include a hepatitis B vaccine in their national immunization programs by the end of the year, but experts said they were unlikely to do so for around another decade.

"Being realistic, I don't see us reaching the target before 2005," Elizabeth McCloy of the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board lobby group said at a conference in Madrid, Spain.
