Outbreak Among Gay Australians Underscores Vaccination Need

An outbreak of hepatitis A virus among homosexual males living in Sydney, Australia highlights the need for the routine vaccination of gay men.

"This outbreak provides further evidence that homosexual men are a risk group for hepatitis A," researcher Marie-Louise Stokes and colleagues wrote ("Outbreak of Hepatitis A Among Homosexual Men in Sydney," American Journal of Public Health, December 1997;87(12):2039-2041).

"For this reason, susceptible homosexual men should be offered immunization now that a safe and effective hepatitis A vaccine has become available."
