New Human Rabies Vaccine Approved in U.S.

A new human rabies vaccine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The purified chick embryo cell culture (PCEC) vaccine is manufactured by Chiron Behring GmbH and Co. under the trade name RabAvert.

Two other rabies vaccines currently are licensed in the U.S.: human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV, trade name Imovax, Pasteur Merieux Connaught, Swiftwater, Pennsylvania) and rabies vaccine adsorbed (RVA, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
