Vaccine Safe But Ineffective in the Middle-Aged and Elderly

Now, in a study in The Lancet, a research team from Sweden has reported that this vaccine was not effective for patients in this age group (Lancet, February 7, 1998;350:399-403).
Dr. Ake Ortqvist and colleagues from various centers in Sweden enrolled into their study 691 patients aged 50-85 years who had been in-patients for community-acquired pneumonia. Apart from the bout of pneumonia they were treated for, the patients were not otherwise immunologically...
