Unprecedented Protection with Prime/Boost Malaria Vaccine

An effective malaria vaccine - possibly capable of treating as well as preventing disease - may be closer to reality than previously thought possible.

Mice primed with a malarial DNA vaccine and boosted with recombinant, live, attenuated vaccinia carrying the same malarial antigen are completely protected against challenge malarial sporozoites.

Although the mouse studies used antigen from the Plasmodium berghei murine strain of malaria, a similar antigen exists on human P. falciparum.
