Evolution of Infectious Agents Discussed

In a paper with implications for the evaluation of vaccine trials, researchers described a theoretical framework that seeks to explain how various strains of infectious agents might evolve.

S. Gupta, N. Ferguson, and R. Anderson, all at the University of Oxford in the U.K., presented their ideas in the May 8, 1998, issue of Science ("Chaos, Persistence, and Evolution of Strain Structure in Antigenically Diverse Infectious Agents").
