The public health hangs on the answer to this seemingly simple question - as does the vast industry investment in vaccine development.

The man charged with tracking U.S. vaccine safety is Robert Chen, chief of vaccine safety and development activity at the National Immunization Program of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Chen's job is to maintain public confidence in immunization programs. Doing this means teasing out actual vaccine-associated adverse events (VAEs) from vaccine-unrelated symptoms in vaccinated people.
