Increased Immune Response at Vaginal Mucosa Does Not Inhibit HSV Infection

A herpes simplex virus (HSV) recombinant vaccine administered to mice was unable to prevent infection at the vaginal mucosal surface, although it did boost immune response.

"Despite the induction of both [immunoglobulin A] IgA and IgG vaginal antibodies following immunization with recombinant vaccinia virus vectors expressing either glycoproteins B or D, viral infection occurred in most animals even after minimal viral dose," reported University of Tennessee researchers N.A. Kuklin and colleagues.

They noted that all infected mice survived and developed "few, in any, clinical signs of infection."
