Intravenous Flu Drug Effective Against Influenza A Virus

Zanamivir, a member of a new class of drugs being evaluated for use in the treatment and prevention of influenza virus infections, was effective when given intravenously in preventing experimental infection with and illness due to influenza A virus in human volunteers.

Previous studies have shown that zanamivir given by nasal spray is effective in preventing infection and in decreasing the severity and duration of illness in experimental influenza infections. Inhaled zanamivir is effective in treating acute influenza, however, this was the first study to show that the drug is also effective when administered by a systemic route in humans.
