According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 38th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, held March 18-21, 1998, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, "Background: Since 1994, Pakistan has conducted annual national immunization days (NIDs) with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) to interrupt wild poliovirus transmission. Despite reported NID-OPV coverage of >95% and routine coverage of 76% for 1996, Pakistan continues to report high numbers of poliomyelitis cases, suggesting that coverage may not be uniformly high in all areas.
