Common Infection May Be Risk Factor for Heart Disease

A virus that affects more than half of all Americans may be a co-factor that leads to the development of atherosclerosis, a disease that causes buildup of plaque that clogs the blood vessels.

It is the most common cause of heart disease. Preliminary animal research linking cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with atherosclerosis and suggesting that the process begins early in childhood was presented in Denver, Colorado at the 36th Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
