Flu Season Mild So Far, But Cases Increasing

The flu has been relatively mild in the United States for Winter 1999, with New York the only state reporting a widespread outbreak, U.S. health officials said.

Since October 1998, 40 other states have reported some flu cases, but no widespread outbreaks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. The number of cases has increased since mid-December 1998, however.

"Influenza is unpredictable. We can't predict whether it will be a mild flu season for the entire year or if it's going to peak later than usual," said Dr. Tim Uyeki, CDC's Center for Infectious Diseases.
