Vaccine Trial Begins in North Carolina

Although he's nervous with the uncertainty associated with an experimental vaccine, one man is happy to do his part to protect others from HIV.

The man is one of 5,000 volunteers nationwide for the first clinical trial of a potential vaccine against HIV. A Winston-Salem clinic is the only center in North Carolina that recruits volunteers for the three-year trial.

Volunteers are reminded often the vaccine is unproven and does not guarantee protection. Unlike other vaccines, it doesn't use a live virus to trigger the body's immune system.
