Australia Ready for Human Vaccine Trials

Human trials of Australian HIV vaccines could begin within months and eventually include thousands of people in Southeast Asia, researchers said.

Trials of the vaccines, which have already protected monkeys against HIV when exposed to the virus, are awaiting government approval, said the Australian National Council on AIDS.

"Australian-developed HIV vaccines are ready to go into human trials," said Chris Puplick, chairman of the council that is the government's main advisory body on HIV/AIDS issues.

Trials to check for adverse reactions to the vaccine would start in July 1999 on about 40 people in Sydney and Melbourne if approval...
