The technique is called transcutaneous immunization or TCI. It uses bacterial ADP-ribosylating exotoxins (bAREs) to carry vaccine antigens across intact skin.
"It's a revolutionary way to deliver antigen," said T.M. Scharton-Kersten of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and IOMAI Corp., Washington, D.C. "It's like putting a hand cream on your skin and getting an immune response."
Scharton-Kersten discussed TCI in a presentation to the Second Annual Conference on Vaccine Research, held March 28-30, 1999, in Bethesda, Maryland.
