Strain-Specific Vaccines Could Stem Meningitis Epidemics

Strain-specific meningococcal vaccines could be effectively deployed in epidemic situations, a study led by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers suggests.

The study, conducted in 1994 during a serogroup B meningococcal disease epidemic in Santiago, Chile, tested two similar vaccines made in Cuba and Norway. Both vaccines were derived from the outer membrane protein (OMP) of Neisseria meningitidis. The vaccines were made from bacterial strains that did not exactly match the epidemic strain.

Children and adults who received either of the vaccines were more likely than placebo recipients to develop immune responses...
