Pentagon Says Anthrax Vaccine Costs Will Double

The Pentagon has renegotiated its contract for supplies of anthrax vaccine which will mean paying more than double the current cost per dose, U.S. Defense Department officials said.

The vaccine, which has prompted controversy over alleged side-effects, will cost $10.64 a dose under the contract with the Pentagon's sole supplier, BioPort Corp., Lansing, Michigan. That is up from the previous price of $4.36.

The total value of the contract with BioPort is $49.8 million, an increase from $24.1 million, the officials said, all requesting anonymity at a media briefing. The new contract was agreed to on July 27, 1999.
