Gallo urged researchers not to give up on creating a vaccine that prevents HIV infection. He warned that vaccines that settle merely for containing HIV infection ultimately may fail to prevent AIDS.
"We think that studies designed to achieve sterilizing immunity are insufficient at this point to lower our criterion for success," Gallo said. "I suggest that a major and too neglected means for reaching the goal of complete protection rests in so-called natural or innate immunity, which can be both prompt and efficient."
