According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 33rd National Immunization Conference, held June 22-25, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, "Background: During 1994-1997, a statewide epidemic of hepatitis A occurred in Oklahoma. Traditional case-finding techniques and limited vaccination programs of children in counties with the highest rates of disease had little effect on the course of the epidemic. In June 1998, the state legislature enacted a measure mandating hepatitis A vaccination for all children entering kindergarten and seventh grade.
