Pneumococcal Vaccine Effective Against Pneumonia, Otitis

Wyeth Lederle's pneumococcal vaccine prevents severe pneumonia, a large-scale clinical trial shows.

And in another large trial, the vaccine protected against acute otitis media (AOM) caused by vaccine-specific bacteria.

The vaccine is less reactogenic than the universally recommended DTP/Hib combination vaccine but more reactogenic than hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine.

"This heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine appears to be highly effective in preventing invasive disease and pneumonia in young children and to have a significant impact on otitis media as well," said Steven Black of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center,...
