Some of these individuals developed influenza even though they had normally protective levels of antibodies specific for the infecting flu bug strain.
Janet E. McElhaney of Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Virginia, and colleagues measured granzyme B responses to influenza vaccination in 100 frail, elderly patients. Granzyme B is the key enzyme involved in CTL-mediated cell killing, a major antiviral immune response.
