Hepatitis A Affecting Older Children and Adults in Latin America

A changing picture of endemic hepatitis A virus in Latin America was presented recently in a report from Mexico.

R. Tapiaconyer and colleagues at the Prevencion and Control Enfermedades in Mexico City conducted a multicenter study involving 12,000 participants from six Latin American countries and who were stratified for age ("Hepatitis A in Latin America: A Changing Epidemiologic Pattern," American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, November 1999;61(5):825-829).

Among the researchers' findings:

The highest HAV seroprevalence rate (89 percent) was found in the Dominican Republic, followed by Mexico (81 percent), Brazil (64.7...
