Educational Reminder Yields Higher Flu Vaccination Rate in Inner-City Elderly

A mailed, patient education brochure resulted in more inner-city elderly people being vaccinated against the flu than a postcard reminder, according to a U.S. study.

The brochure, which contained information on demonstrated reasons for not getting the influenza vaccination, was sent to 740 people, mostly black and low income, age 65 or older. Researcher K. Armstrong and associates followed-up with a telephone survey to determine if participants had received the flu vaccine and to assess their beliefs about the flu and influenza vaccination.
