US Pledges $150 Million to Help Against AIDS

US vice president Al Gore, presiding over his first United Nations Security Council session on January 10, 2000, announced $150 million in stepped-up US contributions in the worldwide battle against AIDS, particularly in Africa where whole villages are being wiped out by the disease.

Addressing the council's first meeting ever on AIDS, Gore said the Clinton administration was seeking another $100 million from the US Congress in this year's budget to combat the virus abroad. He also said the budget proposals would include $50 million to help fund the purchase and distribution of life-saving vaccines in developing nations.
