Mammalian Cell Proteins Investigated for TB Vaccine

In a recent study, researchers reported that two mammalian cell entry (Mce) proteins, Mce1A and Mce1E, were immunologically active during infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb).

S. Ahmad and colleagues reported Mce proteins may be useful in tuberculosis diagnosis and in the development of TB vaccines.

According to the study, Mce protein had previously been linked to Mtb's ability to hide inside macrophages. Four homologous Mce proteins have been found through sequencing of the Mtb genome. Each of these proteins were associated with two integral membrane proteins and encoding six Mce proteins.
