DNA priming followed by protein boosting enhances the immune response of the vaccine to acceptable levels, reported researchers from Taiwan in a study on foot-and-mouth disease.

"Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is the etiological agent of FMD that can cause tremendous loss to the livestock industry," reported Jeng-Jer Shieh and colleagues from the Academia Sinica, Taiwan. "The structure protein VP1 of FMDV carries critical epitopes that are responsible for the induction of anti-FMDV neutralizing antibodies and cellular immune responses."
