Modified Gag Gene May Be a Better Delivery System

Researchers at the Chiron Corporation may have identified a way to modify the Gag gene so that it could serve as a vehicle for gene vaccine delivery in HIV infected patients, according to a report of a study in the Journal of Virology.

"Expression of Gag proteins for vaccines has been hampered by the fact that its expression is dependent on the HIV rev protein and the Rev-responsive element, the latter located on the env transcript," stated J. Zurmegede and colleagues ("Increased expression and immunogenicity of sequence-modified human immunodeficiency virus type 1 gag gene," J Virol, 2000;74(6):2628-2635).
