B/T-Cell Interactions Important for Inducing Immune Responses

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-antigen (Ag)/TCR, B7/CD28, and CD40/CD40L interactions are responsible for stimulating immune responses to glycoconjugate vaccines, researchers in the United States reported.

"Covalent linkage of a bacterial polysaccharide to an immunogenic protein greatly enhances the carbohydrates immunogenicity and induces polysaccharide-specific B-cell memory in vivo," said Arlene H. Guttormsen and colleagues at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts. "These findings have supported the development of glycoconjugate vaccines for serious bacterial infections."
