NIH Awards Company $3 Million to Develop Vaccine

The U.S. National Institutes of Health has awarded a Massachusetts biotechnology firm $3 million to try to create a vaccine for the West Nile virus, which killed seven people in the New York City area last year.

The August 2, 2000, announcement came as several Northeastern states were trying to educate the public about the disease and kill mosquitoes that carry it. OraVax Inc. plans to develop the West Nile vaccine using a proven 60-year-old yellow fever vaccine.

"This is a live viral vaccine like one for measles or mumps or polio," said Thomas Monath, OraVax. "It will cause a very mild infection with no symptoms and leave the person immunized...
