Broad Patent Received for Plant-Based Edible Formulations

ProdiGene, College Station, Texas, announced receipt of a patent for a process that uses plants to develop oral vaccines that can immunize humans and animals against viral diseases.

ProdiGene's patented system (U.S. Patent #6,136,320) makes possible the creation of pharmaceutical products in plants for human and animal consumption, according to John Howard, PhD, ProdiGene. Traditional vaccines are produced, purified, and injected into humans or animals to generate an immune response. The ProdiGene system saves significant cost in both production and administration costs, while also making vaccinations more pleasant for patients.
