Britain Orders Polio Vaccine Recall Because of Mad Cow Disease Fear

Britain's Medicines Control Agency ordered the recall of a brand of polio vaccine on October 20, 2000, after determining the manufacturer had breached safety measures that prevent transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, so-called mad cow disease.

Medeva oral polio vaccine does not adhere to 1999 European guidelines that prohibit use of bovine materials from countries with known cases of mad cow disease in oral medical products, the Department of Health said in a statement. The department determined that bovine products were used in a growth medium used it the manufacture of the vaccine.
