Whole-Blood Assay Gives Rapid Picture of Immune Response to Antiretroviral Therapy

Researchers in Germany have developed a simple, rapid whole-blood assay that estimates total HIV-reactive CD4 and CD8 cells in patients on antiretroviral therapy.

According to Martina Sester and colleagues at the University of the Saarland and the University of Regensburg, CD8 and CD4 cells specific for HIV-1 can be measured simultaneously using their technique, which they described in the December 1, 2000, issue of the journal AIDS.
