Largest Outbreak in the U.S. in Five Years Moved from Work Environment to Community

A large rubella outbreak in 1999 among unvaccinated persons spread from the workplace to the community, with transmission facilitated by crowded working and living conditions, according to an article in the December 6, 2000, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

M. Carolina Danovaro-Holliday, MD, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues investigated 83 confirmed rubella cases that occurred in Douglas County, Nebraska, between March 23 and August 24, 1999.
